Paddling the Mokelumne by Dan Arbuckle

There are many different paddling trips you can do on the Mokelumne depending on what type of kayaking you want to do.  A great run for the recreational boater that wants a little moving water is from the Mokelumne Fish Hatchery down to MacVille Rd. This is a scenic slow moving paddle with lots of places to swim and picnic. This trip takes a few hours and is good most times of the year. Both of these runs require a shuttle so you will need a buddy. Also the parking lot at MacVille Rd. charges a few dollars to park so have some cash ready.  There is a lot of really good water in between MacVille and Highway 99 however due to limited access at this time this section of river is not recommended.

The next spot to put in at is the RV Park right off Highway 99 North of Turner Rd. You can park and use their kayak “put in” for a small fee. This spot is nice because the water is moving so slow that you are able to easily paddle upstream without much effort. This is a great area to paddle because there are not a lot of people or boat traffic. From here you can go up or down stream. If you go down you can make it all the way to Lodi Lake and the Woodbridge Dam before you have to turn around and come back. If you go up you can go for as long as you want, but remember that however far you go up you have to come back down so watch your time and be conscious of how you feel.

We are Sierra Adventure Outfitters a one-stop shop for all your paddling needs. We are huge advocates for low-impact use of the Mokelumne River and we are always exited to share our enthusiasm with others. We lead trips on the Mokelumne every Monday night during spring and summer months. We meet at the lake at 6:00pm and paddle until dark. Our trips are very leisurely and relaxing. It’s a great way to view Lodi from a totally different perspective. As soon as you get on the water the city disappears; your cares and worries of they day seem a million miles away. Come join us! If you need a boat please call in advance so we can reserve one for you. We even bring them to the lake and get you set up with life jacket and paddle. For only $20 we feel it’s the best night out you will find in Lodi. Call ahead of time for more details call (209) 368-3461 or visit us on the web at www.sierraadventureoutfitters.com.
